First Date
A Poem
Melted ice cream ran down our fingers
Plants were lined up as far as the eye could see
They were all for outdoors but we searched for indoor
I loved how you desired a plant to care for
I happily sat in the heat as you searched for shade
Compromise was chosen as our solution
We baked for five minutes in the sun
But the bench by the shade eventually won
You did a lot of talking
I did a lot of listening
Remember the milky way analogy?
I questioned if you were crazy or just that into astrology
I shared with you a story about my physical flaw
You then told me all about yours
How could you share something that deep with a stranger?
Thanks for your honesty about your mental container
You spotted a storefront for sale
“If it was yours, what business would you put there?”
“A shop all about cheeseboards,” I said.
You said, “A music store or perhaps a day care instead.”
We ended in the same spot we began
You hugged me once, you hugged me twice
I giggled and we said our goodbyes
We’ve now made it past date five
